Real Club Pineda de Sevilla: renovating the tradition

Situated just 3 kilometres from Seville, the Real Club Pineda is one of Spain’s most distinguished clubs. Founded as an equestrian club in the 1940s, it has since evolved into a haven for various activities, including golf.

The club’s historic golf course, featuring nine holes designed by Sevillian architects Rodrigo and Felipe Medina Benjumea in the 1940s and an additional nine inaugurated in 1992, is now undergoing a progressive upgrade. After a partial renovation in 2017, the club is embarking on a comprehensive revitalisation project.

With fairways adorned by palm and pine trees, the 18-hole, par 72 course spans over 6,200 meters, offering players a unique experience akin to playing amidst a park, complete with the distinctive feature of crossing a horse racing track. Real Club Pineda also boasts two practice areas equipped with tees, chipping greens, approach zones with bunkers, and putting greens.

The changes at Real Club Pineda

To spearhead this latest phase of improvements, the club’s Board of Directors has enlisted the renowned golf course architecture firm Clayton, DeVries & Pont (CDP). Collaborating with acttua Golf Services, the club’s agronomic advisors, CDP will present a renovation plan within three months. Overseen by Frank Pont, with support from Hendrik Hilgert and professional golfer Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, the project aims to restore the original design of the course’s nine original holes, preserving their historic charm.

Fernández-Castaño expressed his enthusiasm for the project to Golf Industria, highlighting its significance as his first endeavour in Spain. He underscores the commitment to restoring classic courses and ensuring members’ satisfaction with the intervention.

Pont emphasised the focus on restoring the original design’s details, particularly in the green complexes, which have evolved. In dialogue with Golf Industria, Rodrigo Molina, President of Real Club Pineda, expressed confidence in CDP’s expertise and looked forward to collaborating with the team.

As Real Club Pineda embarks on this transformation journey, it reaffirms its commitment to preserving tradition while embracing innovation, ensuring an unparalleled golfing experience for future generations.

Held at the breathtaking Oceânico Golf on its Victoria Course in Vilamoura, Algarve, this edition marked a significant moment for Portuguese golf, firmly placing it on the international stage.

The Victoria Golf Course, a picturesque 18-hole, Par 72 layout designed by none other than the legendary Arnold Palmer in 2004, served as the perfect setting for the 51st World Cup and the sixth as a World Golf Championship event. Its challenging yet scenic layout provided the backdrop for a thrilling competition showcasing the best global golfing talent.

Twenty-four countries, each represented by a dynamic duo of players, converged on Vilamoura to compete for glory and a substantial prize purse totalling $4,000,000.

The Welsh pair of Bradley Dredge and Stephen Dodd emerged as the triumphant victors (189 strokes, -27), displaying exceptional skill and resilience in adverse weather conditions. Despite the final round being cancelled due to torrential rain and intense winds, Dredge and Dodd’s stellar performance in the preceding rounds secured their place in history as the deserving champions. The runner-ups were England (Luke Donald and David Howell) and Sweden (Niclas Fasth and Henrik Stenson), with 191 (-25). Here you can find the tournament summary
