RICARDO SANTOS

FIGHT FOR # 1

Ricardo Santos is one of four players with mathematical chances of moving to the top position of the “Race for Mallorca”, the Challenge Tour ranking, next Sunday, depending on the results he makes at the 57th Portuguese Open @ Morgado Golf Resort, which starts Thursday in Portimão.

The 36-year-old Algarvian is ranked 4th in the European second division hierarchy this week, a consequence of his win at Swiss Challenge, in June and other good results as 2nd place at the D + D REAL Czech Challenge in May, and 3rd place at the Rolex Trophy (also in Switzerland) in August.

According to José Correia, president of PGA Portugal, in an interview this afternoon with the tournament’s Facebook account, “Ricardo Santos has already practically secured the European Tour next year and Filipe Lima is working on that.” José Correia referred to the fact that Ricardo Santos is well ranked in the ranking and everything indicates that he will finish the season in the top-15 which will be promoted to the first division of European professional golf.

With that pressure off his shoulders, Ricardo Santos can now play more freely and the goal of being the 2019 Challenge Tour # 1 – a feat Ricardo Melo Gouveia achieved in 2015 – could be important in keeping him focused and ambitious.

«My goal is to be ranked as high as possible in the ranking. As such, winning the ranking is within my goals, ”the former double national champion told Tee Times Golf Agency in June.

For the third year in succession, Morgado Golf Resort hosts the Open de Portugal with the course in finer shape than ever. Morgado Golf Course has the features of a links course, but instead of being close to the sea, is placed in an area of parkland which, despite its location, receives harsh winds from the coast which is situated just a few kilometres away. The course has been closed to the public for five weeks which has allowed the greenkeepers to prepare it thoroughly, with the fairways in perfect condition and the rough nice and thick, offering a real test to this week’s field.

The 57th Portuguese Open @ Morgado Golf Resort starts at 7:30 am, with a record of 18 Portuguese competing, including Filipe Lima, last year’s runner-up. The Challenge Tour’s only Portuguese tournament, with 200,000 euros in prize money, features 12 of the 16 players who have won Challenge Tournaments this year and 11 of the top 15 in the Majorca Race. A luxury!

The Millennium Golf Course will reduce 30.26 tonnes of CO2, and 87,500KW of energy saving in one year, and the Victoria Golf Course 61.26 tonnes of CO2 and reduce 177,000KW per year. Really impressive numbers that justify the considerable investment.

Energy efficiency will be visible on all golf courses of the Dom Pedro group in proportion to their characteristics.

The work we have done with Grundfos has already shown exceptional results and will ensure our courses are not only in perfect condition all year round, but also increasingly energy efficient and more environmentally friendly.”

Summer in the Algarve, a time of year with high temperatures and no rain at all, makes maintenance of golf courses a huge challenge and often a desperate struggle from the maintenance team to keep the greens looking like a pristine green carpet, that all golfers want to enjoy.

Espiche Golf continues to improve

Since opening in April 2012, the Espiche Golf team have been listening to the feedback from its members and visitors. Espiche Golf has a long-term commitment to improve the playability of the course whilst respecting its authentic nature and maintaining environmental responsibility. We are now implementing what we have learnt!

Bush area lining the fairways has been thinned to help players to find misplaced balls, whilst retaining and protecting sensitive areas of flora and fauna. This is an ongoing job which is done with great care by only a few qualified members of staff.

Strategic bush areacleaning will continue throughout time in our attempt to keep the courseplayable but at the same time eco sensitive.

In some areas, trees have been moved from positions that wereobstructive to the player and relocated to enhance the framing of a hole.

Espiche Golf continues to improve - At Espiche Golf we do not cut down trees. A good example of an olive tree on hole 17 being replaced from a playable area to allocation to the side of the fairway.

The replacement of trees has opened the hole allowing golfers a wider target area on holes such as hole 1 and hole 4.

Using a unique and innovative construction technique, for the past two years we have been renovating the bunkers at Espiche Golf. The in-house method, developed by one of the owners, consists in adding a wire mesh structure at the bottom of the bunker and topped with a permeable concrete. To strengthen the bunker we have also added concrete to the edges. There is now no risk of the sand being contaminated with pebbles. At the same time the bunkers have been loaded with fresh new sand.

To date, 46 of 59 bunkers laid on the course have been remade. The remaining 9 bunkers will be renovated by December 2019.

The freedom on the course that buggy users enjoy has unfortunately been detrimental to helping grow the semi roughs. This is an area that has proved harder to work with and gives the green keeping team an extra challenge. The compacted semi rough areas are being aerated and sanded in order to promote growth in the future. Future additional buggy paths are planned to help compensate as well.

In the meantime, landscaping works will continue to develop throughout the summer…

Espiche Golf continues to improve - Work under progress. Extension of the fairway on hole 14. Golfers will find a wider, more generous landing area in the future.
