Susana Ribeiro admits that 2020 was not a glorious year

Susana Ribeiro

Susana Ribeiro

Susana Ribeiro recognized that her international season was not the best

The former four-time national champion missed the cut at the Spanish Open and ended the season internationally.

A year after having had her best season ever, Susana Ribeiro experienced a troubled 2020, with just a few competitions, and, after missing the cut at the Spanish Open, in Marbella, she recognized that her international season was not the best.

«The 2020 season fell far short of my expectations in several aspects. Firstly, concerning the cancellations of a few tournaments, and, secondly, for my performance, ”she admitted to Tee Times Golf exclusively for Record.

«I felt that I worked hard and the results did not appear in competition. It is frustrating when we feel confident and things do not go as we expected. But this sport is this way and this is also what keeps us trying again and again, ”she added.

At the Andalucia Costa Del Sol, Spanish Open, the story was the same. The national vice-champion of professionals finished in the group of 83rd classified, with 157 strokes, 13 above the Par of the South Course of Real Club De Golf Guadalmina, in Marbella, after 80 and 77 laps.

The tournament ended the Ladies European Tour (LET) calendar, the first European division in the women’s sector.

The Spanish Open was won by the Danish Emily Kristine Pedersen, with 273 strokes, 15 under par, after 68, 71, 68 and 66 rounds. She beat the Spanish Nuria Iturrioz by 4 strokes. It was her third consecutive title and the fifth of her career. At just 24 years old, she is a rising star.

A year ago, Susana Ribeiro made the cut for the first time in LET events exactly in this tournament, but the list of 96 registered was much stronger this year and the cut was established at 8 strokes over Par.

“I don’t think I played so badly for the result that I presented. I missed making birdies on both days, ”said the 30-year-old Portuguese.

The former four-time national champion only converted 1 birdie into 36 holes and the weather didn’t help either: “The course was very demanding, very long and the heavy conditions due to the rain made this aspect even more difficult”.

This did not prevent her from being favourably impressed by the South Course of the Real Club De Golf Guadalmina that she played for the first time: «The course is spectacular, in excellent condition, very strategic and long, with very modulated greens and, in fact, that hole 10 is just beautiful, even parallel to the sea».

Susana Ribeiro has no plans for 2021 due to the cancellation of the International calendars in the female sector. In any case, the goal will always be to do better than in 2020, the year in which she finished 70th in the Order of Merit of the Ladies European Tour Access Series (the second European division), with two top-40s in just two tournaments played. She also competed on the Santander Golf Tour (Spanish professional circuit), in the same two tournaments, but this year she was not a member of the circuit, so she didn’t even appear in the ranking.

Tee Times Golf Agency underline that the South course of Real Club De Golf Guadalmina is the oldest course of the Guadalmina complex. It is renowned for its difficulty, thus making it more suitable for experienced players. Fairways are narrow and well protected by old trees requiring straight shots.
For an unparalleled golf vacation, we recommend the Hotel Guadalmina Spa & Golf Resort, a luxurious 4 star, using our unbeatable golf packages for 3 nights + 2 green fees; 4 nights + 3 green fees, 5 nights + 4 green fees and 7 nights + 5 green fees, in addition to the normal 18 holes with or without a buggy.

The Ladies European Tour announced today that Spain will host the Solheim 2023 Cup on the spectacular Finca Cortesin golf course in Andalusia. Scheduled dates for the competition will be concluded soon.

Spain becomes the 6th European country to host this competition after Scotland, the most recent headquarters on European soil, Wales, Sweden, Ireland and Germany.

Located in the Costa del Sol, in the heart of Andalusia, Finca Cortesin is a world-famous golf destination that has hosted three editions of the European Tour’s Volvo World Match Play Championship, and which regularly ranks among the top five Spanish courses on the lists. The course, whose greens underwent a major remodeling in 2017, is known for its magnificent conditioning and the challenge posed by its design, an ideal complement to its cared for aesthetics.

“We are pleased to announce that Spain will host the 2023 Solheim Cup when the competition returns to European soil for the 18th edition of this great international tournament. Spain is a country passionate about golf, its fans know this sport in depth and from its inexhaustible quarry, generations and generations of great players have emerged. In addition, the Andalusian cultural legacy will make players, guests and supporters live a unique experience ”, says Alexandra Armas, executive director of the Ladies European Tour. “The tournament not only reinforces Spain‘s reputation as an elite golf country, but also the Costa del Sol and Andalusia as essential destinations, something that will undoubtedly inspire future generations to play golf.”

The Spaniards have had a notable weight in the Solheim Cup since the inaugural edition in 1990, and seven compatriots have defended the colors of Europe throughout the history of the competition, a figure that is second only to the players, contributed by England and Sweden. Carlota Ciganda, one of the local heroines, has participated in the last four editions, while marbella Azahara Muñoz has also had four participations since she debuted in 2011. Both were decisive in the recent history of the competition, in the tournament that Europe achieved three victories in the last five editions, including a memorable triumph at the 2019 edition held in Gleneagles (Scotland).

Costa del Sol joins the family of global partners for the 2023 edition, PING and Rolex, historic sponsors of the Solheim Cup. Sport & Business will organize the event and take care of all aspects of the tournament together with the European Ladies Tour.

“I want to thank the Ladies European Tour and the LPGA Tour for their confidence in the Spanish proposal. We will try to organize the best Solheim Cup in history and the most fun. Costa del Sol is a unique destination in the world and we will show that in this tournament. I also want to highlight that the chosen course, Finca Cortesin, is one of the best in Europe and their hotel has been considered the best in Spain, the hospitality that the teams will receive here in Spain will be at the highest level ”, adds Aramburu .

The next Solheim Cup in 2021 will be in Toledo, Ohio, from 4 to 6 September and the American team intends to snatch the European trophy, which won the 2019 edition with a spectacular putt on the last green of the last individual match.
