Espiche Golf continues to improve
Since opening in April 2012, the Espiche Golf team have been listening to the feedback from its members and visitors. Espiche Golf has a long-term commitment to improve the playability of the course whilst respecting its authentic nature and maintaining environmental responsibility. We are now implementing what we have learnt!
Bush area lining the fairways has been thinned to help players to find misplaced balls, whilst retaining and protecting sensitive areas of flora and fauna. This is an ongoing job which is done with great care by only a few qualified members of staff.
An example of bush clearing to the right of hole 16 while allowing nature to regenerate itself on a strip next to the fairway. Golfers can now find their ball and play out onto the grassed area.
Strategic bush areacleaning will continue throughout time in our attempt to keep the courseplayable but at the same time eco sensitive.
In some areas, trees have been moved from positions that wereobstructive to the player and relocated to enhance the framing of a hole.
At Espiche Golf we do not cut down trees. A good example of an olive tree on hole 17 being replaced from a playable area to allocation to the side of the fairway.
The replacement of trees has opened the hole allowing golfers a wider target area on holes such as hole 1 and hole 4.
Using a unique and innovative construction technique, for the past two years we have been renovating the bunkers at Espiche Golf. The in-house method, developed by one of the owners, consists in adding a wire mesh structure at the bottom of the bunker and topped with a permeable concrete. To strengthen the bunker we have also added concrete to the edges. There is now no risk of the sand being contaminated with pebbles. At the same time the bunkers have been loaded with fresh new sand.
Hole 5 – At Espiche Golf we have our own way of building the bunkers.
To date, 46 of 59 bunkers laid on the course have been remade. The remaining 9 bunkers will be renovated by December 2019.
The freedom on the course that buggy users enjoy has unfortunately been detrimental to helping grow the semi roughs. This is an area that has proved harder to work with and gives the green keeping team an extra challenge. The compacted semi rough areas are being aerated and sanded in order to promote growth in the future. Future additional buggy paths are planned to help compensate as well.
In the meantime, landscaping works will continue to develop throughout the summer…
Work under progress. Extension of the fairway on hole 14. Golfers will find a wider, more generous landing area in the future.
