Tee Times Portugal Holidays: Festival of Medieval Arts “Salir do Tempo”, Salir (near Loulé), Algarve, Portugal – 11-13th July 2014
The Algarve, a region of Portugal very popular as a holiday destination, is also rich in culture and history.
Salir village, only about 9 miles from Loulé, will bring some of this history alive as it steps back in time to the middle of the 13th century for the Festival of Medievel Arts. This festival will be exploring the time of the Reconquista (Reconquest) when, in this area of the Iberia peninsula, the balance of power was changing hands, from Muslims to Christians. This historically interesting and also entertaining event will be offering traditional music, along with period crafts and street entertainment.
For those considering booking holiday accommodation in the Algarve, Tee Times Tour Operator recommends the following Hotel Conrad Algarve, Encosta do Lago, Monte Da Quinta Suites and more.
The village of Salir is also famous for its regional cuisine. This includes Xarém (Xerem). This is a traditional Portuguese recipe, which is a stew of clam meat, thickened with yellow maize meal, and finally topped with a mix of bacon, ham and sausage.
Another famous produce of the area is Medronho, which is a brandy. Also known as Aguardente, or Firewater, Medronho is usually about 50% alcohol. This brandy is made from the red berry-fruit of the Arbutus unedo tree (‘Strawberry’ tree), which thrives in the poor Algarvean soil. It is said that, since there is no commercial plantations of Medronho trees in Portugal, the fruit collection and Medronho production is carried out by local farmers.
Golfers can call upon the knowledge, insight and recommendations of Tee Times Golf Agency, when considering the options of the many golf courses along the Algarve. These recommendations include Quinta do Lago South, Pinheiros Altos, San Lorenzo and many more.
