Portugal voted the best golf destination in the world for the third time
 
Portugal was chosen on Saturday as the best golf destination in the world for the third time in a row, receiving the prize awarded by the World Golf Awards, which awards the ‘Oscars’ of the sport.

In a ceremony held at the Conrad Algarve Hotel at Quinta do Lago, Portugal once again was selected ahead of destinations such as England, Scotland, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Wales, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey or Italy that competed in the same category.

“Portugal will continue to work on attracting new segments [golf course professionals, corporate golf, women and young people] and supporting the flagship event: Portugal Masters, already scheduled for September 21 to 24 2017″, emphasized Turismo de Portugal, President, Luís Araújo.

There are currently 91 golf courses in Portugal (of which 66 are 18 or 27 holes). The Algarve is the region with the largest number of golf courses (44%), followed by the region of Lisbon (17.58%).

According to the organization, the World Golf Award “aims to stimulate the golf tourism industry and results from the online voting of professionals related to the sector, specialized tour operators and the media dedicated to golf, but also the public in general.”

At the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course from October 20-23, Portugal Masters, the event naturally makes an impression on the fans witnessing the action, as well as the wider economic impact that extends beyond the fairways.

In 2007, the Portugal Masters became a reality, the first prime golf tournament in the Algarve taking place courtesy of the ambition of the Portuguese Golf Federation, the Tourism Board and the European Tour, building from its beginning as a follow-on from the World Cup of Golf into an event bringing in valuable revenue for the local economy.

Peter Adams, Portugal Masters Championship Director presents the Portugal Masters as an event “largely supported by The Tourism Board since its inception in 2007, so for us at the European Tour the economic value it brings to Portugal, and the local communities in the Algarve, is a critical element in determining the success of the event”.

Ten years on, more than 290,000 golf fans have visited the Algarve, with fans from the UK and Ireland accounting for 24 per cent of the total economic impact of the event in 2015.

10th Portugal Masters – At Vcitoria Golf Course

Portugal Masters with Two Ryder Cup players, several players participating in recent Ryder Cup editions, former Majors champions and European Tour Tournaments winners all set to play in Oceanico Victoria, Vilamoura.

The stars filled participants list including Ryder Cup players, winners of Grand Slam tournaments and local heroes that will grace the tenth edition of the Portugal Masters in the Algarve.

Thomas Pieters, who beat the rookies’ records in the Ryder Cup and last year’s Portugal Masters champion, Andy Sullivan, were part of the Ryder Cup European team and will be present in Vilamoura, along with former Ryder Cup heroes which, this time, were behind the scenes at the Hazeltine National and return to the Algarve: Thomas Bjørn, Padraig Harrington and Paul Lawrie.

Sullivan will try to replicate its last year fantastic display when he set a new tournament record, winning by a margin of 9 shots.

His Ryder Cup partner, Pieters, a Belgian is capable of long distances also set up the European team Ryder Cup to add 4 points in 5 duels played soon in his debut. And note that last year he finished 6th at Oceanico Victoria Golf Course.

This double will be joined by the 2014 Portugal Masters champion Alex Levy, who recently won his third European Tour title in the Porsche European Open in Germany.

Other Famous Names on Portugal Masters

On the entry list are the Swedish Alex Noren, who has won two tournaments this year and finished 11th in the prestigious Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last week; the “bomber” Spaniard Álvaro Quirós – which retains its affiliation to the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course – and his compatriot Jose Maria Olazabal.

The former double champion of the Masters is one of the greatest ever heroes of the Ryder Cup is a good friend of the Portuguese Ricardo Santos and was away 18 months due to injury but has returned to competition and will also compete in the Algarve.

The most important tournament of Portuguese golf will take place from 20th to 23rd October, with the Pro-Am on the 19th, handing out cash prizes amounting to 2 million euros.
