Vale Do Lobo Royal – Saturday 9th July 2011 Weekly Competition

The Society said it would return back to Vale Do Lobo after playing both its courses in April.

The Royal is characterised by undulating fairways, white expansive bunkers all set amidst pine trees and beautiful lakes it is a true golfing treat. It has altered a great deal in its layout since Henry Cotton crafted it in the 1970’s, however, in 1997 it underwent a remodelling but the cliff hole is still its signature – now the 16th. It is a veritable symbol of golf in the Algarve as well as being reptuably the most photographed hole in Europe and probably is!

It was a busy day with a large corporate golf day on the Ocean course whilst other visitors and members were booked on its sister course. The Society were able to negotiate special terms of just €41.00 – fabulous value for a course as good as this. So unsurprisingly a strong field of 15 players turned up for our singles stableford competition. Congratulations to Rod Griffiths, whose card I marked, and Frazer Graham for some fine scoring whilst the rest of us were sub thirty points.

The Old Course next competition day Friday 15th July.

1st: Rod Griffiths (h/c 18): 37pts

2nd: Frazer Graham (h/c 11): 36pts

3rd: Shane Hall (h/c 9): 29pts

Weekly Competition – Vale Do Lobo Ocean

Following on the success of the previous week at the Royal it was only right to return back to tackle the breathtaking Ocean course. Situated on the very edge of the coastline with fairways running down to the beach it really is a spectacular course. Remodelling a few years ago has seen the course improve and special note must be made of the ninth hole. Crafted from nothing this new hole is a fabulous addition with its cascading water ready to trap any stray ball.

The Society was able to secure special rates enabling many to try Vale Do Lobo for the very first time – we look forward to hopefully returning later in the season.

Players eagerly set of in the sunshine and soon found the course in as good a condition as the Royal the week previous. Conditions were ideal though blustery at times. Newcomer Iewan Bounds championed through the field with a solid 32 points to take the first prize; not bad for his first time a VDL.

1st: Iewan Bounds (h/c 8) – 32pts

2nd: Ann Campbell (h/c 20) – 29pts

Nearest the Pin (17th): Uncontested

Vale do Lobo Royal – Weekly Competition

Another wonderful afternoon. Our thank you for Vale do Lobo for the excellent deal to Chez Carlos Golf Society.
A warm welcome for the members: Trevor and Heather Ward and Tony and Lorraine Mullen, who were in need of the sun of Algarve.
We also had some visitors joining our members, making a group of 15 players.
Vale do Lobo Royal proved once again that is a very hard course, where any player should be happy with the result of their game.
The best results went to 3 players all with 33 points. The winners were decided in the back-nines. In first place Jeff Syemour, in second place Heather Ward and in third place Garry King. There were some no return score cards.
Nearst to the pin: the front-nine was on hole 7, with 125 m, where Jeff was the winner, who placed the ball 1,5m from the hole and held the putt for a tasty birdie.
The back-nine was on hole 16 – the famous hole over the cliff – and the winner was Silvya King, being maybe the only one player putting the ball on the green
As usually the presentation was in Chez Carlos restaurant.
Next Saturday, on 19th September, we will have the next game on Laguna golf course at 13:06. There are great expectations, as the course has been closed during 7 months for redesigning and maintenance.
