Sofia Sá (+3) and Ricardo Santos (-12), on July 22, won 18,200 euros from the Portuguese Golf Federation (FPG) for winning the KIA Absolute National Championship at the Quinta do Peru Golf & Country Club in Sesimbra, near Lisbon.

Sara Melo (+33) and Tiago Mendes (+29) have both won their respective 2nd Category national championships, while Pedro Cruz Silva (-8) has won the amateur national title.

The KIA Absolute National Championship, established in 2020, brings together professionals and amateurs, female and male, simultaneously awarding the main national amateur and professional titles.

In 2020 there were still two National Championships, the FPG and the PGA Portugal, but in 2021 the FPG took over all the events and created a perfect symbiosis of two events that until then had existed separately: the Absolute National Championship (for amateurs) of the FPG, and the PGA National Championship of Portugal.

Sofia Sá is now a double absolute national champion. She is the only player to have done this since the event started including amateurs and professionals.

Ricardo Santos is a different story. For the first time since the event started bringing together professionals and amateurs, the player from Vilamoura won the title of absolute national champion.

As for Pedro Silva, he won his second title in a row as the amateur national winner.

Alexander Amey, Ana da Costa Rodrigues, and Pedro Figueiredo “Figgy” won the 2nd FPG Circuit Tournament of 2023 at Ribagolfe Lakes, in the Lisbon region, after a tense final day of competition.

The Male Amateur was the closest competition, requiring a playoff to determine a winner between Vasco Alves and Alexander Amey with an aggregate result of 147 strokes (+3).

The playoff was decided on the 18th hole, with Alexander Amey coming out on top after a birdie. The Medal Net prize went to Duarte Gonçalves, who ranked third with 148 strokes (+4).

Ana da Costa Rodrigues came in first place in the women’s tournament with a result of 151 (+7), 6 strokes better than Luciana Reis and 8 strokes better than Constança Mendonça and Gisele Morna. Maria Francisca Salgado was awarded the Medal Net prize.

Pedro Figueiredo “Figgy” won the Professional tournament with a score of 70 strokes (-2), finishing with a total of 142 (-2), one stroke better than Vitor Londot Lopes, Tomás Silva, Ricardo Santos, and Pedro Almeida. Pedro Figueiredo was awarded 1,700 euros as prize money.

Tomás Bessa, who won the 1st FPG Circuit Tournament of this year, ended up in sixth place at Ribagolfe Lakes.

In the Seniors competitions, André Holtreman Roquette and Marta Lampreia won.

Quinta do Vale, in the Algarve, will play host to the next tournament that is part of the Portuguese Golf Federation Circuit 2023 in June. After that, competitions are scheduled to take place at the Oporto Golf Club (September) and the Aroeira Pines Classic (November).

Portugal Golf Holidays – Cascais received 490.000 tourists in 2022

Bay of Cascais. Cascais received 490.000 tourists last year

Cascais registered good numbers in 2022

There were 491,241 visitors to Cascais last year, who accounted for 1,181,877 overnight stays. The average room price in 2022 was €133.80, an increase of 18.3% from the previous year at this time. The growth rate was 21% higher than in the same time frame in 2019.

The United Kingdom was the most popular international market for the city in 2022, accounting for 125,028 hotel nights. Spain thus loses the first place, traditionally occupied, among the main source markets for foreign guests.

In the golf sector, British tourists represented the largest share of foreign golfers, with the Germans in second place.

The “increasing qualification of golf visitors compared to prior years” is highlighted by Turismo de Cascais. In 2022, there were a total of 215,805 rounds of golf played, a 21% increase from 2019.

Turismo de Cascais believes that the loosening of restrictions on free movement has helped tourism grow in a good way.

“We’re delighted about Cascais’ 2022 visitor increase and confident for 2023. But we can’t ignore the fact that we’re still in an uncertain time because of the war and the sharp rise in inflation and interest rates”, warns Bernardo Corrêa de Barros, president of the Cascais Tourism Association.

Since “the line of recovery registered with the normalisation of the pandemic” shows improvement, this year looks promising for Turismo de Cascais.

For Bernardo Corrêa de Barros, the rise in the number of tourists and occupation indicate that the town is capable of giving “a distinctive, safe and unforgettable experience”.

As a result of the area’s abundance of high-quality golf courses—some of which are among the best in Portugal—golf tourism is another important industry in the city.
