Quinta do Lago Series – Laranjal Sunday 9th June 2013

Set in a valley of orange groves behind the Quinta do Lago resort, this beautiful golf course was the setting for this week’s Chez Carlos Golf Society outing.  Those who had played the course previously were loud in its praise before we started and those who had not were similarly impressed afterwards.

The course meanders through parkland with sufficient trees to cause problems for the stray shot, but sparse enough to allow a recovery.  Similarly there is just enough well placed water to make several holes memorable for their design and testing to play.  The greens were fast and true with subtle borrows to make them a test for even the best of putters.  The rest of us just had to accept what happened!  The course was immaculately presented and the staff were friendly, courteous and efficient.  This is a lovely golf course.

Scoring on the whole was excellent with 9 players scoring in the 30’s.  The winner though was David Exley with 38 points, 19 on each 9.  Second place went to Peter Bell with 37 points, who benefitted from his new “official” handicap of 20.  In 3rd place was Nuno Louro with 36, including 22 on the outward 9 where he holed putts from vast distances much to his delight!  Unfortunately the back 9 proved more difficult.IMG_20130609_092533

There were two nearest the pin prizes this week and selecting from the 5 par 3’s was difficult as none is shorter than 155 meters.  Hole 3 was perhaps the most straightforward and Bob Guard won the bottle of wine with a fine shot to within 3 meters.  The testing 11 at 170 metres proved more difficult with Neil Rogerson pipping Ron McLachlan by a few centimeters, but still some way from the flag.

Carlos had two special prizes which were drawn from all the cards, the first a 1 hour physiotherapy massage was won by David Exley, and the second – a free entry to the next match in the series at Quinta North – was won by Peter Bell.  First and second again!

Afterwards we were treated to a superb lunch and wine back at Chez Carlos restaurant.  Thanks go to Felipe and all his staff for their food and their service.  Thanks too to Carlos for organizing such a great day at a truly remarkable value .

Quinta do Lago South – Sunday, 26th August 2012

Our first Summer Event was always likely to be popular after all we were to play one of the finest courses in the Algarve at a very special price followed by a BBQ back at our base in Vilamoura. We gathered mid-morning at the QDL driving range for a brief presentation at the new Paul McGinley Fitting Centre. State of the art video equipment and swing analysis with professional assistant ensures your new clubs are tailor made. It is well worth a visit.

Quinta Do Lago South has hosted the Portuguese Open eight times. In 1989, Colin Montgomerie won his first European Tour event here by an impressive 11 strokes, set a course record of 63 and a Tour record of 24 under par. The course is laid out on beautiful undulating terrain with shady umbrella pines and a few man-made lakes that attract many aquatic bird species. The signature hole is the scenic par-3 15th (160mts) with a long carry over a lake to the green set amongst pine trees. Warren Griffiths took the honours of nearest the pin here after hitting his shot to within a metre and securing a birdie. Special mention must also go to Paul Beevers taking the Longest Drive with a mighty 283mts on the fabulous 17th hole – awesome.

The course was in fine condition which is something that you always come to expect from Quinta. Sun and blue skies were the order of the day though a coastal breeze helped from the temperature from soaring – perfect.

Multiple prizes today with four nearest the pin competitions, Gross Score, net Stableford and a Team Stableford. Special thanks are extended to our sponsors that include in no particular order Onyria Palmares, Vale Do Lobo, Monte Rei, Pestana Group, Boavista Golfe, Morgado / Alamos Golfe, Catmandoo Clothing, Chez Carlos Restaurant & Bar, Professional Golfer Monia Bernardo and Chez Carlos member Chris Milford.

Afterwards it was an optional return back to The Chez Carlos Restaurant & Bar for a specially prepared BBQ that included suckling pig, wild boar and octopus salad. Our thanks are extended to Fillipe and his team for looking after us so well and to all those that took part throughout the day. It was a great event and one which we are sure to repeat.

Quinta Do Vale – Saturday 3rd December. Weekly Competition

The Quinta do Vale, designed by Seve Ballesteros with 6 Par-5’s, 6 Par-4’s and 6 Par-3’s with stunning views over the Guadiana River to Spain this is no push over and when the wind blows it is up there with the hardest courses to play – no +40pts on this track! It has been over two years since the Society had played here so a visit was long overdue.

Millionaire’s golf would have a been a fair description today. No one ahead of us or behind, a manicured course with superb greens under clear blue skies and sun and all for the Society price of 29€. Just a shame it’s not a big closer to Vilamoura & Quinta Do Lago as it would be a great asset in this area. A small field didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and with a empty course all were round within 4 hours. As we’re so close to the border do as everyone does and fill your car up with fuel and take some Spanish vino back with you!

1st: Peter Densham – 27pts

2nd: Chris Milford – 26pts

Nearest The Pin (16th): Peter Densham
