Golf tourism is growing in Huelva

The golf sector in Huelva, in Costa de la Luz, reported a 48.88% rise in overnight stays and a 31.29% increase in foreign travellers in February compared to the same month in 2022, confirming its deseasonalizing role.

The Huelva Golf Course Association, a member of the Tourism Business Circle, has favourably judged these data, released by the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which support the increase attached to promoting this sector, which is so essential for Huelva.

“A good scenario was in sight for this segment for this year as a result of the first contacts kept with international operators (European market)”, according to a statement. The scenario has been confirmed by the data obtained in the first months of 2023.

Initial expectations have been exceeded, according to January statistics showing a 72.96% increase in hotel accommodations and a 67.42% increase in foreign visitors.

From a financial standpoint, the industry is still having the same problems it did this time last year due to the “disproportionate” increase in production and operating costs that pretty much every activity is experiencing.

Thus, “we find ourselves with the only segment that actively and certainly complements the development of the tourist activity linked to the holiday segment, and is effective in terms of the fight against persistent seasonality that it suffers from”, the Association concluded after considering the available data.

Huelva is home to stunning golf courses like El Rompido North and South, often considered among the finest golf courses in the Costa de la Luz region.

Spain Golf Holidays – Good forecasts for Spain’s tourism sector this Easter

Playa Burriana in Málaga. Favorable forecaster for the Spanish tourism sector this Easter

A busy Easter is expected in Spain

According to SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index, 60% of Spanish hotels’ April guests will be foreign. The platform predicts a high occupancy in the first long holiday period of the year: the Easter.

Tourists are spending more and returning to travel. Easter Week reservations help to predict one of the strongest summers in recent years with higher revenues, reservations, and occupancy due to international tourist rebound.

SiteMinder puts hotel bookings 20.9% above pre-pandemic levels, confirming the year’s auspicious start. To be more precise, Easter weekend bookings account for 14.2% of all bookings in Spain’s hotels.

According to current statistics, the top five nationalities choosing Spain as their holiday destination this year are the British, the French, the Germans, the Italians and the Dutch.

Despite inflation and rising prices, people still want to travel. Spanish hotels are currently 12% more costly than they were in 2019, and the average price per room has risen by 25% in the previous year. The percentage of cancellations has dropped by 11%, as well.

The reopening of China has accelerated the recovery of reserves in recent weeks, helping Spain and other countries across the world.

Reservation levels throughout the world (across 40 nations) have, on average, stayed just slightly above their levels before the pandemic.

Spain has regained its pre-pandemic status as a top tourist destination, surpassing other European nations like Portugal, Italy, France and Germany.

The Costa del Sol remains the top golf holiday choice for golfers visiting Spain. This is mainly due to incredible golf courses like Valderrama and Finca Cortesin, and the status this region has gained over the years.

The World Hotel Index numbers portray a positive picture for the summer as well, mostly because of rising optimism and the early planning with which tourists book their holidays in Spain.

Spain Golf Holidays – Spain’s tourism industry shines at Service Excellence Awards

Many of Spain's hotels and golf courses won at Service Excellent Awards gala

Son Muntaner was one of Spain’s winners

Several of Europe’s top golf clubs, teams, and pros were present at the event in the UK, where 59club presented its awards for outstanding service to its members and visitors. Many of those awards came to Spain.

The 59club Service Excellence Awards recognize the best customer service providers for having achieved the highest standards of excellence during 2022.

The winners are selected based on the results of mystery shopper audits that compare the quality of service offered to visitors, club members, and prospective members to objective benchmarking standards set by 59club.

About 40 individual and team awards were handed in 18 categories at the event, honouring service excellence across all departments from sales and service to operations and retail to the spa and golf course to the front desk and food and beverage service.

Many Spanish golf industry representatives walked up to the stage to accept awards, after beating competitors from neighbouring markets including Portugal, Italy, and Greece.

The Golf Operations team at Finca Cortesin, led by Rocio Sánchez, was named “Team of the Year” by 59club Europe South, while Sánchez herself was named “Golf Manager of the Year”.

Food and beverage director at Camiral Golf & Wellness, Marta Castells, and head greenkeeper at Son Muntaner, Paco Gavira, were respectively voted “Food and Beverage Manager of the Year” and “Greenkeeper of the Year” for southern Europe.

“Celebrating accomplishments is important to our values and a priority at 59club. Our venues around Southern Europe not only continue to give exceptional experiences but continually seek to further expand their trips by striving for that additional 1% day after day”, adds Lee Mathew Waggott, Managing Director of 59club Europe South.

“In a highly competitive environment, being nominated for and winning an award is a great honour, and the ability to share this recognition with individuals and teams across the property is incredibly important”. Waggott continues, “We are looking forward to the upcoming season and we welcome more progressive and ambitious teams to our awards next year”.

This year, 59club awarded 28 “Golden Flags”, with recipients including Camiral Golf & Wellness, Club de Golf Alcanada, Finca Cortesin, and Golf Son Muntaner; 17 “Silver Flags”, with Infinitum being Spain’s representative; and 15 “Bronze Flags”, with recipients including Golf Son Quint, Golf Son Vida, and Pula Golf Resort.
