Portugal Golf Holidays – Cascais received 490.000 tourists in 2022

Bay of Cascais. Cascais received 490.000 tourists last year

Cascais registered good numbers in 2022

There were 491,241 visitors to Cascais last year, who accounted for 1,181,877 overnight stays. The average room price in 2022 was €133.80, an increase of 18.3% from the previous year at this time. The growth rate was 21% higher than in the same time frame in 2019.

The United Kingdom was the most popular international market for the city in 2022, accounting for 125,028 hotel nights. Spain thus loses the first place, traditionally occupied, among the main source markets for foreign guests.

In the golf sector, British tourists represented the largest share of foreign golfers, with the Germans in second place.

The “increasing qualification of golf visitors compared to prior years” is highlighted by Turismo de Cascais. In 2022, there were a total of 215,805 rounds of golf played, a 21% increase from 2019.

Turismo de Cascais believes that the loosening of restrictions on free movement has helped tourism grow in a good way.

“We’re delighted about Cascais’ 2022 visitor increase and confident for 2023. But we can’t ignore the fact that we’re still in an uncertain time because of the war and the sharp rise in inflation and interest rates”, warns Bernardo Corrêa de Barros, president of the Cascais Tourism Association.

Since “the line of recovery registered with the normalisation of the pandemic” shows improvement, this year looks promising for Turismo de Cascais.

For Bernardo Corrêa de Barros, the rise in the number of tourists and occupation indicate that the town is capable of giving “a distinctive, safe and unforgettable experience”.

As a result of the area’s abundance of high-quality golf courses—some of which are among the best in Portugal—golf tourism is another important industry in the city.

Portugal Golf Holidays – Algarve had the best February since 2007

Portimão, Algarve. Algarve had the best February since 2007

Portimão had the biggest growth in the Algarve

The Association of Hotels and Tourism Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), with headquarters in Albufeira, reports that the February 2023 occupancy rate for tourist accommodation units in the Algarve was 48.7%, the highest February occupancy rate in the past 16 years.

According to the data released, the occupancy rate for February was 5.4% higher than the same month in 2019 and 2.1% higher than the same month in 2020, the last month before the Covid-19 restrictions.

According to AHETA, the markets that most contributed to the growth witnessed were the national market with +1.4pp, the Dutch market with +0,9pp, and the British market with +0.5pp in comparison to February 2020.

As said by AHETA, the highest gains compared to 2020 were seen in the regions of Portimão (+16.5pp), Monte Gordo (+11.1pp), and Tavira (+7.2pp) in February.

The signs are clear: the Algarve tourism sector is bouncing back from the economic crisis brought by the Covid-19 pandemic. After a tough period of two years, the Algarve is recovering well, with a good start in 2023, but there is a long way to go in order to make a full recovery.

The Algarve has some of the best golf courses in Europe, like Monte Rei (considered the best in Portugal), Palmares, and Dom Pedro Old, all of them well ranked in Europe’s top 100 golf courses.

Spain Golf Holidays – Spain’s tourism industry shines at Service Excellence Awards

Many of Spain's hotels and golf courses won at Service Excellent Awards gala

Son Muntaner was one of Spain’s winners

Several of Europe’s top golf clubs, teams, and pros were present at the event in the UK, where 59club presented its awards for outstanding service to its members and visitors. Many of those awards came to Spain.

The 59club Service Excellence Awards recognize the best customer service providers for having achieved the highest standards of excellence during 2022.

The winners are selected based on the results of mystery shopper audits that compare the quality of service offered to visitors, club members, and prospective members to objective benchmarking standards set by 59club.

About 40 individual and team awards were handed in 18 categories at the event, honouring service excellence across all departments from sales and service to operations and retail to the spa and golf course to the front desk and food and beverage service.

Many Spanish golf industry representatives walked up to the stage to accept awards, after beating competitors from neighbouring markets including Portugal, Italy, and Greece.

The Golf Operations team at Finca Cortesin, led by Rocio Sánchez, was named “Team of the Year” by 59club Europe South, while Sánchez herself was named “Golf Manager of the Year”.

Food and beverage director at Camiral Golf & Wellness, Marta Castells, and head greenkeeper at Son Muntaner, Paco Gavira, were respectively voted “Food and Beverage Manager of the Year” and “Greenkeeper of the Year” for southern Europe.

“Celebrating accomplishments is important to our values and a priority at 59club. Our venues around Southern Europe not only continue to give exceptional experiences but continually seek to further expand their trips by striving for that additional 1% day after day”, adds Lee Mathew Waggott, Managing Director of 59club Europe South.

“In a highly competitive environment, being nominated for and winning an award is a great honour, and the ability to share this recognition with individuals and teams across the property is incredibly important”. Waggott continues, “We are looking forward to the upcoming season and we welcome more progressive and ambitious teams to our awards next year”.

This year, 59club awarded 28 “Golden Flags”, with recipients including Camiral Golf & Wellness, Club de Golf Alcanada, Finca Cortesin, and Golf Son Muntaner; 17 “Silver Flags”, with Infinitum being Spain’s representative; and 15 “Bronze Flags”, with recipients including Golf Son Quint, Golf Son Vida, and Pula Golf Resort.
