Tee Times Portugal Golf – Martin Kaymer and Thomas Bjorn Heroes of Ryder Cup are Back in Portugal Masters Competition
The ancient world 1st and recent Italy Open Vice-Champion and the President of the Championships Committee will be at the European Tour in the main Portuguese Golf Tournament with 2 Million Euros in prizes in Vilamoura.
Martin Kaymer intends to avenge at the Portugal Masters the bitterness that came out of the Italian Open two weeks ago, where he nearly won his 12th title on the European Tour.
The former world No. 1, 30 years old, missed it in Milan in the play-off with Swede Rikard Karlberg.
The Portugal Masters is one of his favorite tournaments of the year and will offer a chance of remission, when the German head a strong list of entries that will compete at the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course from 15 to 18 October, with the ever desirable Pro 14 -Am.
It will be his sixth visit to Vilamoura and although he never won the trophy two million tournament prize money, got an excellent 7th place (tied) in rookie year in 2007, when its first round of 61 strokes set a new record for the field. The player who has residences in Mettmann (Germany) and Scottsdale (Arizona, USA) believes that the relaxed atmosphere of the Algarve tends to loosen the best.
“It is a very good tournament – said – and I think it should be even more recognized than it is. The golf course is brilliant and when the working day ends is very nice to visit the marina at night. It has everything we want in a tournament.”
“In the Oceânico Victoria can achieve low numbers and is a really fun course to play, especially the last hole. The 15 is a Par-4 good for the drive, the 16 is a Par-3 treacherous, the 17 is a Par-5 exciting where you can easily make both a birdie and a bogey and the latter is necessary to be brave to trying to make a birdie. It is a very exciting end, both for the players and for the fans” he added.
Martin Kaymer will have Thomas Bjorn as company in the Oceânico Victoria Golf Course, a player he knows well because it was his pairs partner in fourballs in the last Ryder Cup.
As Kaymer, Bjorn chose not to compete in the Portugal Masters after the resounding victory of Europe in Gleneagles, Scotland, but the Dane is pleased to return to a tournament that has always played between 2007 and 2013.
“Last year was the first time I missed the Portugal Masters. That alone shows how like the tournament. It is one in which many of the players want to be every year because it is a friendly and relaxed week, because it’s great to have the hotel on the field, because this time of year the weather is usually very good and because the field usually offers many birdie opportunities’, elucidated the also president of the Championships Committee of the European Tour.
“My record in the competition is not as good as I’d like, but in 2013 I did a second round of 63 strokes, so I know I can achieve low numbers in this field. Last year I missed because I needed to take some time off after the Ryder Cup, but I can not wait to go back this year “, said the winner of 15 titles on the European Tour, which is also the winner of the last Open de Portugal in 2010.
