Enjoyed the course lay out. Service friendly, but was obviously under pressure with lunch orders as service slow. Greens and tees really need some work. Poor condition. A lot of traffic through course which is affecting poor rolls on greens with lots of bumps and poorly repaired pitch marks. Would go back, but not until some reassurance over condition of course. The tee areas and pin positions appear like not been changed for some time, hence lots of wear and tear.

4hours 40minutes to do 18 holes. Beautiful course, but sadly staff here didn’t push along slow groups. I play every week in 4 players, doing 3hours 30mins, worse case 4hours. Won’t play here again. Too many golfers with no etiquette or care about how long they take. Disappointing for a lot of expense.

Ja, u moet snel bestellen want de keuken gaat bijna dicht en drie kwartier later kan er bij een andere tafel nog gewoon besteld worden! -**- Overall, the course was in great shape. Only 5 hours with a buggy (and waiting at every hole) is really long. Restaurants are always a bit difficult if you want something to eat. .... Yes, you have to order quickly because the kitchen is about to close and three quarters of an hour later you can still just order from another table!

At tee 20 we caught up with an excessively slow game of 4 and then we realized that there was a competition or other event reserved for Juniors. 1h30 to painfully make 3 tees. Impossible to play we had to give up. For a reservation made 2 months before, it is expensive paid.

Pro shop staff were very efficient and helpful and so were the drinks staff and buggy masters. However, cramming over 700 golfers on a course meant a round that took over 5 hours and a 13.48 tee time putting out in the dark on the 18th. Greens were terrible and slow and looked like they hadn’t been cut that day. Bunkers had hardly any sand in. Not what I remembered from Vila Sol 15 years ago. I think I need to avoid this time of year if I come back as the staff were excellent and I can’t fault them, but the overall value is not reflective of the prices charged. Groups behind us wouldn’t have even got to finish the round so we were lucky in that respect.

The course was generally good, and it was not too busy, so we were able to tee off a little earlier than anticipated which was good. However, the bunkers were not in great condition as they had not been raked and didnt have much sand in them, so they were very firm. The greens had also recently been cored and sanded so they were slow. We had only booked to play 9 holes but they club stated it was 18 so I am not sure where this error arose and if we over paid. Having said the above, I would return.

We played the original 18 holes,which is a terrific layout.. The holes are demanding and you need to put the ball in the right place to score well. The greens were true and relatively quick probably running at about 11 on the Stimp However the course is in particularly poor condition.There are parts of the fairways that are completely devoid of grass and winter rules are definitely needed. It will e some weeks before the course has recovered.

I played holes 1 to 18 at Vila Sol about 2 weeks ago and thought the front 9 holes were in bad condition. The fairways were bare and the greens were not good. After some rain in the last 2 weeks, I thought the course would be improved. I was wrong. Although we had preferred lies, there were many times when there was not any grass to move the ball to. The greens were better. Many tee boxes didn’t have a level area. I would not choose to return to Vila Sol unless the course was greatly improved.

Out of the Pestana courses we played we thought this was in the poorest condition possibly due to high use. It was extremely busy and is made up of three 9 hole courses which overlap, although there are some nice holes to play the volume of people playing at the same time,with wandering players from adjacent fairways this led to a slow round of golf and a lot of waiting.

Die Grüns auf den Löchern 19-27 sind gewellt und ziemlich schnell. Erwischt man eine falsche Stelle, läuft der Ball leicht übers Grün hinaus. Da ist Stress vorprogrammiert. Die Grüns auf den Löchern 1-9 sind nicht so herausfordernd. Bei einem hohen Anspiel bleiben die Bälle liegen. Die Fairways leiden offensichtlich unter Wasserknappheit, wie kahle Stellen bezeugen. Fazit: Der Golfcourse ist mit seinen 27 Löchern offenbar gut frequentiert. Die Greenfeepreise sind im Vergleich zum Gesamteindruck des Platzes etwas zu hoch angesiedelt.

As we had a flight to catch and knew we would not finish the round, we chose to stop after 9 holes to relax and have something to eat. This was very disappointing. Vila Sol holes 1-9 are brutal, you are either carrying water to the greens or you are hitting down a narrow fairway, once on the putting greens they all slope back to water (if its a water hole).... but still looking forward to having another go !

Our least favourite course. When we arrived we asked for push carts and were told there was only one. My husband decided to carry. By the time we left the pro-shop, there were no push carts. I am not able to carry and we had to rent a buggy although I would much rather walk. We felt that the proshop could have given us a reduced price for the buggy but we were still asked to pay 45 Euros. The course was narrow to play and in our opinion not nearly as nice as the other four. We asked to change our second tee-time at Via Sol to another course and I appreciate your help in doing so. The drive from the Atlantico took 75 minutes due to construction, another reason we did not like this course as much.

Always a big challenge at Vila Sol. The 3 starting holes are as tough a start as anywhere. Straight hitting is key as the fairways are tight and tree lined. Today the scores highlighted how tough it is to keep a good score going. The greens were quite firm and fairly quick. Normally the greens are a bit slower than this. All in all a good day. This course is being improved monthly by Pestana. The removal of some trees that have become too big and are ruining the surface of the fairways with their shallow roots has improved the 19 - 27 holes. This removal may also address the negative comments made by players about the state of the paths etc. The roots have damaged the paths too. A great course, getting back to its former glory.

On occasions the Society will support an external event. Saturday’s Vila Sol Open Day was one such occasion where invited guests had the opportunity to play alongside members on the Championship course (Prestige & Challenge) followed by lunch. New owners Pestana are making gradual improvements to reinstating it back to its former status as one of the finest courses in the Algarve - its layout is simply one of the finest and most challenging. It is 20 years old this year and found fame at an early age when it hosted the Portuguese Open two successive years in 1992 & 1993. Numerous tournaments followed including the famous Johnny Walker Classic, its home for five years and the continuing Bobby Robson Classic. Architect Donald Steel built a masterpiece demanding positional play at its very finest. The first four holes have a reputation as being one of the hardest starts in Portugal and deservedly so! Neither nine is any easier according to its members. As with any great course the closing holes are strong from the sloping and narrowing 17th to the 18th for a finish right outside the clubhouse terrace.
